When it comes to everyday spills on area rugs, there are times when these stains can be cared for at home. Other times these spots need to be treated by a professional at a wash facility. It is important to know whether the stain can be treated at home, with a homemade spot solution, or if the rug needs to be taken to a wash facility, where special chemicals and care will be used. If a stain is incorrectly evaluated, and treated with an over-the-counter spot cleaner instead of being treated by a professional, the stain will permanently set.

To avoid setting stains, here are a few stains that can be treated at home, and a few that should be left to the pros.

Note: These suggestions are based on general terms. Every rug and stain are different. If you have a high-end, delicate area rug, always have your rug professionally cleaned. As far as all other rugs go, we always suggest to have your rug, and any stains on it, treated by a professional at a wash facility.  If you are unsure as to whether the stain is treatable at home, leave the spot untouched, and immediately have your area rug professionally cleaned.

Treat at Home:

  • Sugar stains such as those caused by soda, beer, etc.
  • Pet feces (light amount with solid texture)
  • Coffee (if caught early enough)

Leave it to the Pros:

  • Pet Urine, Vomit, or Feces (heavy amount/liquid texture)
  • Playdoh
  • Chocolate
  • Wine
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Permanent Marker
  • Juice
  • Mustard & Ketchup

If you have any other questions regarding stains that may not be listed here, please feel free to contact us.

As mentioned above, we always suggest you have your rug cleaned by a professional, as they have the necessary techniques and cleaning equipment, to keep the stains from permanently setting. Once a stain has set, a professional cannot get the stain out.
